What actually happens in an ADHD assessment?

14 March 2026 5 min read

An ADHD assessment isn't a single test — it's a structured clinical interview combined with screening tools and (where possible) collateral history from someone who knew you as a child.

Before the appointment

Most clinics send a DIVA-5 or ASRS-style questionnaire to complete in advance. You'll also be asked about school reports, childhood behaviour and current symptoms.

During the appointment

Expect a 60–120 minute video or in-person interview with a psychiatrist or specialist nurse. They'll work through the 18 DSM-5 criteria and assess impairment across work, home and relationships.

After

You receive a written report within 1–4 weeks with a yes/no diagnosis, severity rating, and recommendations for treatment, therapy and any adjustments.
